I have been fighting what I am guessing is a yeast infection for over a week now. It hasn’t gotten extremely bad until today, I am not wanting to take an antibiotic because I am 34 weeks pregnant. Any suggestions or ideas for natural solution to clear this up?
As well as treatments you also want to make sure you’re not doing anything to make the infection worse. Normal vaginal health; wash regularly but only with water (soaps, washes, wipes, sprays, powders, douching, or even ‘feminine’ cleaning products all effect vaginal pH so cause infections), keep yourself dry (avoid tight or synthetic clothing), safe sex (anything that goes into your vagina should be clean, no food stuffs), and always wipe front to back.
Yogurt is the best known way, it contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium that also happens to be found in healthy vaginas and that kills yeast by producing hydrogen peroxide. You need to insert plain pro-biotic yogurt into your vagina, do this before bed to avoid mess then wash in the morning, do this for a few days to get rid of the infection. You can put the yogurt into ice cube trays to make it easier to insert, the cultures don’t survive as well but this way is less mess and the coolness helps ease the irritation.
Garlic, not recommended if you’re sexually active, but it works as it contains natural antifungal substances that kill off yeast. You insert a garlic clove into your vagina, peel beforehand but do not score the clove in anyway as this can sting your vagina, if worried about removal you can use a little clean muslin around it or tie string around it for easy removal.
Tea tree oil *check with your doctor!* essential oils tend to be a bit of a grey area when it comes to pregnancy, better to be safe then sorry. It’s a generall all-round anti-nasties, if you have a menstrual cup, softcups or a diaphragm you can put a few drops of the oil into these then insert into your vagina, ideally dilute with water but it is safe to use neat. Otherwise you can use an old jug, fill with warm water and put a few drops of the oil into the water, then use the water to wash over your vulva, best to do this in the shower or over the toilet to avoid water getting everywhere. If you can handle it you can just put a few drops directly onto your vulva and into your vagina, but it can sting.
Cranberry juice, these are used when you have a urinary infection as the berries contain substances that inhibit bacteria from clinging to the walls of your urinary tract, but they are also a plus because cranberries lower the pH of your urine, which then passes over some of your vulva on it’s way out so may help tackle a yeast infection or at least ease symptoms a little.
